From A to B - the Journeys and Reflections of a Decade Past

A programme of experimental screen work that encompasses the last decade of sue.k.'s international practice.

Saturday, May 29th

Showing will be a selection of works by sue.k. that traces her practice of creating experimental film/video from an early stage of its introduction. At the time of discovering experimental film and vieo sue.k. had been practicing as an artist and had had a number of solo exhibitions and participated in countless group exhibitions. Trained initially as a sculptor her practice at that time in the late nineties had included not only the traditional mediums of sculpture, drawing, and painting but also performance in the form of contact improvisation dance, percussion, and singing. The discovery of moving image as a form of artistic expression, particularly in the experimental genre, brought all of these areas of discipline together. It is from those intiial beginnings of visual and performance art that sue.k. draws from in the making of her experimental screen work.

Support C31 as it implements a digital signal!

Melbourne’s local community television station C31 is making an urgent call to the community to
help raise money for the transition to digital.

For two weeks spanning March 15 to March 28, C31 is asking residents in Melbourne and
Geelong to dig deep in support of their only community television broadcaster.

The community will also have the chance to speak directly to their favourite C31 hosts if they
subscribe during a two hour LIVE broadcast being held on March 28 from 7.30pm to 9.30pm.

C31’s digital upgrade project demands more than $1.3 million, a sum the Station is currently $350,000
away from reaching.

A one-off Federal Government grant and a one-off State Government grant have not been able to make up
the shortfall.

If C31 does not reach its funding target, the Station’s facilities cannot be completely upgraded for digital
and some internal operations may be put on hold, said C31 General Manager Richard McLelland.

“We are looking to Victorians to dig deep and contribute to their community television station. This Station
could not exist without the support of the community, and it’s not often that we ask for financial help from
our viewers – but we need it now,” said McLelland.

The Federal Government granted C31 a Digital License in November 2009 after six years of campaigning
and community pressure.

To subscribe to C31 and help Switch On Digital, head to www.c31.org.au now or call (03) 9660

Cinema Voltaire is launched!
A NEW HOME FOR UNDERGROUND FILMS

Lovers of underground, avant garde, and experimental cinema will have a new venue from Saturday 27th February when Cinema Voltaire holds its first screening at the Australian Centre Of Performing Arts (ACOPA) in North Melbourne’s Raglan Street.

Purge

PURGE

Cinema Voltaire is the brainchild of Lindsay Saddington, director of ACOPA, who said there was an obvious dearth of venues where underground, avant garde and experimental films could be seen.

Set in a cabaret lounge environment, Cinema Voltaire aims to show cutting edge shorts and features from all over Australia and the world, sometimes teamed with live performances. The aim is to have one curated program every second month from February.

The first film will be David King’s underground quasi-sci fi feature film, PURGE, praised by Dutch film critic Ton van Rooij as “unconventional”, “confronting”, and “visually arresting”. The film is unclassified so only those over 18 can attend.

Tickets will be $12 or $8 concession with all proceeds being used to set up and run future screening programs. A fully-licensed bar also operates at the venue.

Cinema Voltaire is seeking quality underground, avant garde, and experimental films for future screenings. Filmmakers and those wanting more information about screenings can contact Lindsay Saddington on 9326 9094 or via admin@acopa.com.au

The first screening will be on Saturday 27 February at 8pm. Address is 14 Raglan Street, North Melbourne.

Delicate Matter: experiments with flesh and the analogue

A programme of experimental film curated by Richard Tuohy.

It’s the flesh, the touching physicality and tiny inconsistencies in approximation and decay that give the analogue physicality of cine film, with its fragility and its presence, with the vitality of its fleshiness.

(All works in this programme have at some stage used film as a source material in its production.)
