Kieran Galvin
b. May 5, 1966, Cork, Ireland.

BIOGRAPHY:   Kieran Galvin grew up in Ireland. He lived for extended periods in London and New Zealand before he settled permanently in Australia in 1992. He has traveled widely. France and Thailand rate highly with him.

A self-taught writer and filmmaker, he is a late starter - making his first self-funded short film The Burning Boy (12 mins) in 2000. It went on to screen at over 40 film festivals. Four years and several shorts later, Kieran directed his debut feature Puppy (2005, 92 mins). Independently financed, the film went into production without market attachments but secured a world sales agent and domestic release upon completion.

Kieran says he is full of the same contradictions we all live with as human beings: "I'm a minimalist but I'm a capitalist. I'm an atheist but I'm spiritual. I'm against war but I understand the need for violence. I want to change the world but I was 37 when I first voted in an election."

Burning Boy

CRITICAL OVERVIEW:   Coming from a writing background, Kieran is first and foremost a storyteller. He is fascinated by intelligent outsiders and his films often explore complex characters in unusual circumstances. In Puppy, a delusional man rescues a young woman from killing herself only to hold her captive at his remote property. A strange romantic relationship develops between the man and his resourceful captive.

Kieran also explores sexuality in his films. This is especially evident in The Burning Boy, Bad Ass Mono-Winged Angel (2000, 11 mins) and Contact (2002, 17 mins), films which are primarily concerned with gay or bisexual men.

Thematically Kieran says he finds himself constantly revisiting 'love, loss and longing' and the inevitable imbalance in love relationships.

Kieran's approach to filmmaking tends towards the classical, preferring film as a medium, and visual composition over movement and Gattling-gun editing. "I like to let things happen within the frame so there is a natural rhythm in the way the actors are working off each other".
