Rodney Bourke reports (June 2009):

Filmmaking in 9.5mm, 16mm, 8mm, Super 8, Single 8 and Double Super 8

Keep your originals on FILM, "Saving the Past and the Future" for Family & Filmmaking.

Why Film?Although it was back in the 1930’s that Kodachrome was developed, it wasn’t until the 80’s that Super 8 Kodachrome was scanned and calculated as having at least 1,200 lines resolution and 16mm Kodachrome well over 3,600 lines. But since Kodachrome has been discontinued. Living in the Millenium, New developments have happened in Film Technology, with Fuji Velvia, Kodak’s Black & White and Negative Film Stocks being released with resolution, definition and colours far exceeding Kodachrome. For the opposite effect you can use high speed film, designed mainly for night cinematography, giving that grainy look with a warm texture, and artistic feeling that pixels cannot imulate. Some say Digital DVD with 500 lines resolution has replaced Film! But I say it is only a replacement for Analogue VHS. For Archiving always keep your original Master on FILM, by making a transfer, you have the best of both worlds. One does not replace the other, but can compliment the other.

As Video and Computers are always updating themselves, and becoming Redundant, Out of date, and Worthless. Real Filmmakers using Real Film don’t have this problem, what you learn Today is still applicable Tomorrow, as film has the highest resolution, , the equipment still retains its value and Usefulness. Thus allowing the filmmaker the Convenience to make a copy to a lesser medium like DVD.

High Resolution Film (Sun)

R25N Fuji Single 8, 40 ASA Kodachrome, 50ASA Fuji Velvia, Pro 8 /45 50D Neg

Medium Resolution Film (Cloud)

Kodak 64T, 100ASA Kodak Plus-X B&W, 100ASA Fuji Velvia, Pro 8 /12 100T Neg

Low Resolution Film (Night)

RT200N Fuji Single 8, 200ASA Kodak Tri-X B&W, 200 & 500T Kodak Vision Neg, Pro 8 200T to 500T Neg

FILM STILL HAS THE HIGHEST RESOLUTION/DEFINITION

New 16mm film stock, will look just as good weather it is in a 16mm Movie Camera made in 1920’s or year 2000’s. Same with Still FILM

New 35mm Still Film Stock, in an old 35mm Still Camera from 1930’s will look as good as a year 2000’s model.

Not so with Digital every year there being outdated in resolution, with new Cameras and new Memory Cards. Film users don’t have this problem.

Want to buy a cheap 22 Megapixel camera, then buy a 35mm FILM SLR, this is the result of a Fuji Velvia Slide, according to Australian Photography Magazine, February 2005, Page 74.

SUPER 8 ALIVE & REVIVED NEW SUPER 8 EKTACHROME 64T & 100D AND SUPER 8 FUJI VELVIA 50D

Since the death of Kodachrome 40, THREE new films have been released.THE NEW SUPER 8 EKTACHROME 64T & 100D. Note: not all Super 8 cameras,
can correctly expose these films, I recommend ,

to do a TEST ROLL to see if it comes out fine, or
you may have reduce exposure to light by ½ or 1 stop.

(Note; Nano Lab can process 64T as a 40ASA, if you tell them)
see also
http://super8wiki.com/index.php/Super_8_EKTACHROME_64T_motion_picture_film_exposed_in_old_cameras

The New Super 8 Fuji Velia 50 ASA seems to work on all Super 8 cameras with a correct exposure, But to be 100% sure before making your Hollywood master piece I recommend always do a TEST ROLL, and write down your experiments. eg Day, Night, Indoors, Outdoors, Sun, Shade, 1, 9, 18, 24 Frames Per Second, Zoom in & out, Macro. And try different film stocks to suit your needs, etc. And read your Instruction manual.

Kodak also continues to make Black & White Super 8. http://motion.kodak.com/US/en/motion/Hub/why1.htm

LUX non-profit organisation based in UK aims to, among other things, distribute moving artists' works internationally. Via this initiative the Moving Image Coalition screened works from France and Austria at our screening on June 10, 2003. This will be a reciprocal venture, where we hope films from Melbourne MIC members will screen internationally as part of LUX screenings.

The Association of Moving Image Archivists (AMIA) is a non-profit professional association established to advance the field of moving image archiving by fostering cooperation among individuals and organizations concerned with the acquisition, preservation, and, importantly for MIC members, exhibition and use of moving image materials.
